Las empresas atuneras NIRSA, EUROFISH, JADRAN, SERVIGRUP y TRIMARINE que están asociadas en TUNACONS para impulsar un proyecto de mejoramiento de la pesquería de atunes con red de cerco en el Océano Pacífico Oriental (OPO) se encuentra realizando alianzas e investigaciones para contribuir en la gestión de esta pesquería y su relación con la sostenibilidad a largo plazo de las poblaciones de atún y el impacto ecológico de las mismas.
En este sentido TUNACONS firmo esta semana con el Instituto Nacional de Pesca del Ecuador (INP) un Memorándum de Entendimiento con el objetivo de formalizar y brindar un marco de cooperación técnica tendiente a desarrollar un Programa de monitoreo a bordo e Investigación Científica y Tecnológica sobre la flota Pesquera Industrial Atunera con cerco menor a clase 6 según clasificación de la Comisión Interamericana del Atún Tropical (CIAT) que cumpla con los objetivos del Plan de Acción del FIP que desarrolla TUNACONS.
El FIP contempla dentro de su Plan acción la ampliación del monitoreo con el propósito de tener un adecuado registro y análisis de las capturas objetivos e incidentales en lances sobre objetos flotantes y brisas, y sobre esta base técnica se adoptaran estrategias para mejorar acciones de conservación recomendadas por la CIAT y el gobierno del Ecuador. Toda la flota atunera de cerco menor a clase 6 representa aproximadamente el 5% de la capacidad de flota atunera de cerco total que opera en el OPO.
EL INP estará a cargo de seleccionar, entrenar y preparar los observadores que irán a bordo de la flota de las empresas que son pate de TUNACONS que tienen esta clase de barcos, de conformidad a los estándares que emplea la CIAT, a través de observadores calificados o mediante instructores que dicten cursos de capacitación para formar nuevos observadores, de tal forma que logren alcanzar su certificación y calificación para constituirse como observadores del Programa de APICD y/o PROBECUADOR; así como también sobre el diseño de los materiales para recolección de información técnica necesarios para cumplir con los objetivos del Programa.
El INP se comprometió también va a preparar y presentar:
● Informes científicos y técnicos trimestrales sobre las capturas y especies acompañantes.
● Informes de los resultados de capturas objetivos y no objetivos de los monitoreos por barco.
● Informe anual del estado de situación de las capturas objetivos y no objetivos.
El INP también aportará con recurso humano calificado, equipos e infraestructura de contrapartida, para el desarrollo de ciertas actividades requeridas por el Programa que tiene una vigencia de tres años con opción a ser renovado.

National Fisheries Institute of Ecuador signs Memorandum of Understanding with Tuna Conservation Group (TUNACONS)
The tuna companies NIRSA, EUROFISH, JADRAN, SERVIGRUP and TRIMARINE that are associated in TUNACONS to promote a project to improve the tuna fishery with purse seine in the Eastern Pacific Ocean (EPO) is making alliances and investigations to contribute to the management of this fishery and its relationship with the long-term sustainability of tuna stocks and their ecological impact.
In this sense TUNACONS signed this week with the National Fisheries Institute of Ecuador (NFI) a Memorandum of Understanding with the objective of formalize and provide a technical cooperation framework to develop an On-Board Monitoring Program and Scientific and Technological Investigation on the Tuna Industrial Fishing fleet with purse seine less than class 6 according to the classification of the Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission (IATTC) that achieve the objectives of the FIP Action Plan developed by TUNACONS.
The FIP contemplates in its Action Plan the extension of the monitoring in order to have an adequate record and analysis of the objective and incidental catches in sets on floating objects and breezes, and on this technical basis they will adopted strategies to improve recommended conservation actions by the IATTC and the government of Ecuador. The entire purse-seine tuna fleet under class 6 represents approximately 5% of the total purse-seine tuna fleet capacity operating in the EPO.
The NFI will be in charge of selecting, training and preparing the observers that will go on board the fleet of companies that are part of TUNACONS and have this class of ships, in accordance with the standards used by the IATTC, through qualified observers or through instructors who give training courses to prepare new observers, in a way that they achieve their certification and qualification to constitute themselves as observers of the APICD and / or PROBECUADOR Program; as well as the design of the materials for collecting technical information necessary to achieve the objectives of the Program.
The NFI also committed to prepare and present:
- Quarterly scientific and technical reports on catches and companion species.
- Reports of the results of objective and non-objective captures of the monitoring by ship.
- Annual report on the status of the objective and non-objective captures.
The NFI will also provide qualified human resources, equipment and counterpart infrastructure for the development of certain activities required by the Program that has a validity of three years with an option to be renewed.
